4 Common Resume Mistakes that are keeping your Resume from Jumping to the Next Level

Your Resume Might Be Holding You Back

I’ve reviewed hundreds of resumes over the years — for friends, mentees, students, and community members — and I keep seeing the same four mistakes over and over again. These aren’t small formatting issues; these are the kind of mistakes that can mean the difference between landing an interview and getting lost in the pile. And the frustrating part? They’re completely fixable.

Mistake #1: Listing responsibilities instead of achievements. Your resume shouldn’t read like a job description. Instead of “Responsible for managing a team,” write “Led a team of 8 that delivered a $2M project 3 weeks ahead of schedule.” Numbers, impact, results — that’s what gets attention. Mistake #2: Using a generic resume for every application. I know it’s tempting to send the same resume to fifty jobs, but hiring managers can tell when you haven’t tailored your resume to their specific role. Take the extra twenty minutes to customize. Mistake #3: Burying your strongest qualifications. If your most impressive accomplishment is hiding on page two, move it up. Recruiters spend an average of six seconds on a resume — make those seconds count. Mistake #4: Ignoring keywords from the job posting. Many companies use applicant tracking systems that filter resumes based on keywords. If the job posting says “project management” and your resume says “oversaw projects,” you might get filtered out.

Small Changes, Big Results

The good news is that fixing these mistakes doesn’t require a complete resume overhaul. Start with your most recent role: rewrite your bullet points to focus on achievements, sprinkle in relevant keywords, and lead with your strongest points. Then do the same for each role working backwards. These small changes can make a massive difference in your callback rate. Your experience deserves to be seen — don’t let a fixable mistake keep it hidden.
