9 Mistakes I've done as a Solo Female Traveler
Learning the Hard Way
Solo travel has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life, but let me be honest — I have made some mistakes along the way. And not the cute, Instagram-worthy “oops, I got lost in a charming village” kind of mistakes. I’m talking about the “I’m standing in a foreign country at midnight with no phone battery and no idea where my hostel is” kind of mistakes. So here they are, my nine biggest solo travel fails, served with love and lessons.
1. Overpacking. My first solo trip, I packed like I was moving abroad permanently. 2. Not researching local customs. I accidentally offended people in more than one country simply because I didn’t do my homework. 3. Saying yes to everything. Being open is great; being reckless is not. 4. Ignoring my gut. Every time I ignored that little voice saying “something’s off,” I regretted it. 5. Not having backup copies of documents. One stolen bag taught me that lesson real quick. 6. Skipping travel insurance. I know, it seems like an unnecessary expense — until it’s not. 7. Trying to do too much. I crammed so many activities into my itineraries that I forgot to actually enjoy the places I was visiting. 8. Not telling anyone my plans. Safety first, always. 9. Comparing my trip to other people’s. Social media is a highlight reel, not a travel guide.
Mistakes Are Part of the Journey
Here’s the thing — every single one of these mistakes taught me something valuable. They made me a smarter, safer, and more intentional traveler. Solo travel isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being present, adaptable, and brave enough to figure things out on your own. If you’re thinking about traveling solo, don’t let the fear of messing up stop you. You will mess up. And it will be some of the best learning you’ve ever done.
