How I Empowered My Best Friend to Secure a 30% Salary Increase With Just One Sentence

The Phone Call That Changed Everything

My best friend called me in a panic. She had just received a job offer — a great one — but the salary was lower than what she knew she was worth. She was about to accept it as-is because, in her words, “I should just be grateful they offered me the job.” Sound familiar? How many of us have been conditioned to feel grateful instead of empowered? How many times have we left money on the table because we didn’t want to seem “difficult” or “greedy”?

I listened to her explain all the reasons she shouldn’t negotiate — she was afraid they’d rescind the offer, she didn’t want to seem ungrateful, she wasn’t sure she “deserved” more. And then I said the one sentence that changed everything: “They already chose you — now you get to choose your terms.” There was silence on the other end of the phone. And then she said, “Oh my God, you’re right.” She went back, negotiated confidently, and walked away with a 30% salary increase. Thirty percent. That’s not just more money — that’s a completely different financial trajectory.

Why We Need to Have These Conversations

This story isn’t just about one negotiation. It’s about the systemic conditioning that teaches women — especially women of color — to shrink themselves, to accept less, to be grateful for crumbs when they deserve the whole table. We need to be having these conversations with our friends, our sisters, our mentees. We need to normalize negotiation as a basic life skill, not an act of aggression. The next time someone you love is about to settle for less than they’re worth, be the voice that reminds them: they were chosen. Now it’s their turn to choose.
