Inspiring the Next Generation: My Talk at Southeast New Mexico Community College

Meeting Students Where They Are

One of the most meaningful parts of my work is getting to speak at community colleges. These institutions are often overlooked, but they are where some of the most resilient and determined students in the country are getting their start. When I arrived at Southeast New Mexico Community College, I was greeted by students who were juggling full-time jobs, families, and coursework — and still showing up with fire in their eyes.

My talk focused on the idea that your starting point is not your finish line. I shared my own story of being a first-gen student who didn’t always have the “right” resources or connections, and how I learned to create opportunities rather than wait for them. I could see heads nodding in the audience — these students understood exactly what I was talking about because they were living it every day. We talked about imposter syndrome, about the guilt of pursuing education when your family needs you, and about the courage it takes to bet on yourself.

The Ripple Effect

After the talk, a student came up to me with tears in her eyes and said, “I was going to drop out next week, but now I’m not.” That one sentence made every mile of travel worth it. This is the ripple effect of representation — when students see someone who looks like them, who comes from where they come from, doing the things they dream of doing, it shifts something inside them. It moves the needle from “maybe” to “why not me?” And that shift? That’s everything.
