Why I Left My Job at Microsoft

The Job Everyone Wanted Me to Keep

Leaving Microsoft was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, and not because the job was bad. It was actually a great job. Good salary, incredible benefits, smart colleagues, and the kind of brand recognition that made everyone from my family to strangers at parties impressed. “You work at Microsoft? Wow!” But here’s what nobody tells you about dream jobs: sometimes the dream belongs to someone else, and you’re just living in it.

The cracks started small. I noticed that the work that excited me most — mentoring, speaking, community building — wasn’t part of my job description. The things I was actually being evaluated on felt increasingly disconnected from what set my soul on fire. I started dreading Monday mornings, which confused me because I was supposed to be grateful. I was a first-gen Latina at one of the biggest tech companies in the world — how could I possibly be unhappy? But unhappiness doesn’t care about your resume. It just is.

Choosing Myself

The day I put in my resignation, I felt a mixture of terror and relief that I can only describe as jumping off a cliff and growing wings on the way down. I didn’t have a perfect plan. I didn’t have six months of savings. What I had was clarity — the bone-deep knowing that if I stayed one more year, I would lose a part of myself that I might never get back. Leaving Microsoft taught me that there’s a difference between a career and a calling, and that sometimes you have to let go of what’s good to make room for what’s meant for you. It’s scary, it’s messy, and it’s absolutely worth it.
